Why am I losing followers on Instagram?
Your follower count is dropping, and it feels personal. But a falling number doesn't always mean people are actively leaving you — often it's something else entirely. Here are the six most common causes, from most to least likely, and how to find out exactly what's happening to your account.
1. Instagram is purging fake accounts
Instagram regularly deletes bot accounts and inactive profiles in large waves. If you lost many followers overnight, it's almost always this — not a mass exodus. The followers you "lost" were never real people.
2. Follow/unfollow hunters
Many accounts follow you only to get followed back — then unfollow two days later, no matter what you do. If you see a pattern of new followers vanishing after 24–72 hours, that's the follow/unfollow method in action. It has nothing to do with your content.
3. A post landed wrong
Unfollows often cluster around a specific post or story. Without timestamps it's impossible to know which one — but with a log of when each unfollow happened, you see it immediately. That doesn't mean the post was bad; it means it filtered out people who were never your audience.
4. You've been posting less (or much more)
Long pauses make people forget why they followed you. Sudden content avalanches flood their feed. Both produce a steady drip of unfollows — visible as a slow, constant drain rather than spikes.
5. Accounts get deactivated — and come back
When someone temporarily deactivates their account, they disappear from your follower list — and reappear when they return. It can look like an unfollow followed by a new follower, but it's the same person. A good tracker distinguishes deactivation from a real unfollow, like we do.
6. People actually left
Sometimes it's real: interests changed, their feed got full, or your content stopped landing. That's normal — even the biggest accounts lose followers every single day. What counts is the net: are you gaining more than you lose?
Stop guessing — see exactly who and when
Everything above is guesswork until you see the data. WhoDitched.me shows you every unfollow with a name and a timestamp, who's new, and how long people followed you before leaving — no password, no app. Then you can see for yourself whether it's bots being purged, hunters jumping ship, or content that needs adjusting.
