Other explanations for sudden drops
- A big account deactivated. Temporarily deactivated accounts vanish from your follower count — and return when they reopen. If the number falls and recovers a few days later, that was it.
- You got mentioned somewhere the wrong crowd saw it. A viral post landing outside your audience brings a wave of new followers — who vanish just as fast. The drop is just the wave receding.
- Bought followers disappeared. If you (or someone who "helped" you) bought followers, those are the first accounts Instagram deletes. The number falls back toward its real level.
How to find out what happened to your account
Without history, you can only guess. With a log of your follower list, you see the answer directly:
- Who disappeared? Accounts with no profile picture and no posts = a purge. Real profiles you recognize = real unfollows.
- When did they leave? All at once during one night = a purge. Spread over days = something else.
- How long did they follow you? Accounts that followed for two days = follow/unfollow hunters. Accounts that followed for years = worth thinking about.
